By reading the copy from the brochure below on the opening of the GM Tech Center in 1956 one can find out a great deal about what was going on behind-the-scenes during the mid-century years inside GM. One of which was how the world's largest manufacturer had just built a sprawling campus like institution in the Detroit suburbs in what was a vast farmland area. And, it's no surprise that within 25-years time, this development built in Warren, Michigan had helped this town quickly progress to become the third largest city in the state by 1980! But there is more, for this pamphlet reveals how confident GM's elite cadre was on how this company was going to help America win WW Two way back in 1942. That's because GM's business model showed it as being the most likely end scenario for the war, on account of the fact America's factories were safe and virtually untouched while Nazi Germany's factories were being bombed to oblivion. It wasn't hard for GM's number crunchers to do the math and let Washington know this was simply going to be a war of attrition...and depending how fast Detroit's Arsenal cranked out it's weapons, would completely determine the length of the war in Europe. Simply put, GM's leaders (one of which was Big Bill Knudsen being the General of War Production...who had come straight out of GM's presidency to go to Washington to represent Detroit's ordnance muscle) all knew they had the edge over Germany. So, with this kind of leverage, they bet heavily that the new "Arsenal of Democracy" with its headquarters in Detroit's auto capital, would prevail victorious.
At this time in history [1942] GM was the undisputed heavyweight champion in the world when it came to volume production. Was the massive force behind "Detroit's dependency on design" a fundamental feature in GM's secret war plan? Absolutely. Think about it for a second, America and her allies were just beginning to bomb the hell out of German factories. This would then continue afterwards at an unprecedented rate, and, all the while America's factories would remain untouched safely using a brand new state-of-the-art volume production technique based on Harley Earl's design obsolescence juggernaut. Naturally, now that Earl's story has finally been uncovered in history and is rapidly being fleshed out for the first time...we can all better understand now how this very technique he invented (his "new profession") was having a radical effect on GM's assembly line products right before WW Two. GM's new paradigm used Designer-Earl's device of "pre-engineering transportation product" ahead of time...before they ever even reached any traditional production engineer's hands. It is a certainty that without Harley Earl's inventing Detroit's dependency on design that America would never have been able to perfect and build a staggering amount of high quality designed ordnance products at an unprecedented face pace...like the world had never witnessed before. Below is a unique post war quote from H.J. Earl explaining what's addressed in the previous paragraph. Remember, before Harley Earl moved to Detroit in 1927 there was no such thing as industrial espionage involving anything pertaining to the look and shape of the exterior of Detroit's automobile designs. Now we all know today, that this area [the secret province Harley Earl literally invented] is the area most sought after regarding each auto company's product designs. Again, for decades of time, General Motors Corporation has been playing dumb and simply subverting information like this: “Because of the importance in such a highly competitive field of keeping new designs secret, the automobile Stylists works in a building surrounded by guards, in a room that is always locked (even in big companies the keys are mighty scarce). All the details of the design including preliminary engineering drawings are prepared within the studio.”
