| A full decade before color movies appeared on the scene, Harley Earl had moved from Hollywood to Detroit in 1927 and rapidly began colorizing America’s automotive world. Or another way of putting it: Henry Ford's Detroit world was black and white until Harley Earl colorized it. Now that a number of significant Harley Earl works of art are being better understood in our society and culture, it provides a tremendous seal of authenticity. The Oldsmobile F-88, Futurliner and Bonneville Special that sold at auction in January, 2005 and 2006 went for a combined total of over $10-million.
A lot of people are starting to finally realize that "Ace Auto Stylist" (examine a 1939 Hollywood Citizen newspaper headline below) is just an acronym for a "Contemporary Artist." Harley Earl's complete and genuine story surfacing will end up giving an artistic boost to all GM’s products…not just the millions of ones from the past. One thing is certain; it’s going to start a national treasure hunt for the legions of this modern master’s greatest works still out there.
After Hollywood High School, Harley attends USC; notice track team photos above

An artist and purveyor to millions of Americans, Harley Earl created works of art that survive as symbols of a vanished age, an age of America's automotive opulence but also of craftsmanship, integrity and beauty. |
